AbbVie has launched a multi-year partnership with the Chicago Cubs to raise awareness and funds for cancer research through a campaign called “Striking Out Cancer.” Starting with today’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, AbbVie will donate $233 for every strikeout recorded by a Cubs pitcher at Wrigley Field during the 2025 regular season. The donation figure honors the estimated 233 Americans diagnosed with cancer every hour, as reported by the American Cancer Society.
"Every strikeout this Chicago Cubs season is more than a statistic on the scoreboard – it is a step forward in supporting those living with and fighting cancer. Together with our hometown partner the Chicago Cubs, we aim to create greater awareness for cancer advocacy and to make a remarkable impact for those living with cancer worldwide," commented Tracie Haas, senior vice president, corporate affairs, AbbVie.
Proceeds from the season-long campaign will be contributed to Cubs Charities, benefiting not-for-profit organizations focused on cancer research and patient support. This year’s donations will include support for Conquer Cancer®, the ASCO Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing life-saving cancer research globally. Additional cancer-focused organizations will also receive funding through the program.
Alex Seyferth, vice president, Cubs Corporate Partnerships, commented, "We're honored to team up with AbbVie and do our part to help strike out cancer. Every dollar raised will go to organizations on the front line of fighting this terrible disease. Together, the Cubs and AbbVie are committed to raising awareness and donations to help those impacted by cancer."
This initiative reflects AbbVie’s commitment to oncology as part of its broader mission to address serious health challenges across therapeutic areas like immunology, neuroscience, and eye care. AbbVie’s oncology portfolio currently supports patients living with leukemias, lymphomas, lung, and gynecological cancers. The “Striking Out Cancer” campaign will run throughout the entire 2025 Cubs regular season.
"We're incredibly grateful to be a beneficiary of the 'Striking Out Cancer' campaign. The support from AbbVie and Cubs Charities is vital, enabling us to advance our critical work and bringing us closer to achieving our vision of a world where cancer is prevented or cured, and every survivor is healthy," said Nancy R. Daly, chief executive officer, Conquer Cancer. "
