AGC Biologics has secured a major long-term manufacturing agreement even before its new Yokohama, Japan, facility officially opens. A global biopharmaceutical company has signed a multi-year commercial contract that reserves nearly 50% of the site's mammalian manufacturing capacity. The agreement, expected to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, will see AGC Biologics manufacture a minimum of 35 batches each year across five biologic products. This partnership is aimed at ensuring a stable and reliable global supply of these medicines for patients worldwide.
The agreement covers several important stages of biologics manufacturing, including process transfer, manufacturing scale-up, regulatory validation, and long-term commercial production. The customer also plans to seek approvals from leading global regulatory agencies, including the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), and Japan's Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA). To support this timeline, four Process Performance Qualification (PPQ) campaigns will be completed during the first two years of the project.
This partnership reflects a growing trend in the biopharmaceutical industry, where companies are placing greater emphasis on building resilient and reliable supply chains. Drug developers are increasingly choosing manufacturing partners in politically stable countries in order to reduce geopolitical, regulatory, and trade-related risks. According to Alberto Santagostino, President and CEO of AGC Biologics, the agreement highlights the company's global manufacturing network, expertise in single-use technologies, and ability to provide consistent quality standards. He also noted that the Yokohama facility combines AGC Biologics' global experience with Japan's reputation for manufacturing excellence and dependable delivery.
The Yokohama site is scheduled to begin operations in 2027 and will significantly expand the company's manufacturing capacity. The facility will be equipped with four 2,000-litre Cytiva single-use bioreactors and two 5,000-litre Thermo Fisher Scientific DynaDrive single-use bioreactors, adding 18,000 litres of single-use production capacity to AGC Biologics' global network. Construction is expected to be completed by December 2026, after which selected customers and industry partners will have the opportunity to visit the site before commercial manufacturing begins.
Tadashi Murano, President of AGC Life Science Company, said that securing a major commercial customer before the facility becomes operational demonstrates strong confidence in the site's future capabilities. He added that the facility's location next to the AGC Yokohama Technical Center provides customers with access to an established innovation ecosystem, making Japan an attractive destination for biologics outsourcing. The Yokohama project is also supported by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) as part of its 2022 biomanufacturing investment programme, which aims to strengthen domestic production and reinforce Japan's position as a trusted biologics manufacturing hub.
Once operational, the Yokohama facility will offer mammalian cell development and GMP manufacturing, cell therapy services through six dedicated clean rooms, and mRNA development and manufacturing supported by specialised IVT, purification, and lipid nanoparticle (LNP) production lines. Backed by more than 30 years of GMP manufacturing experience, over 100 successful regulatory inspections, more than 30 commercial product launches, over 100 regulatory approvals, and experience developing over 400 products for more than 250 customers, AGC Biologics aims to make the new Yokohama site a key part of its global manufacturing network.
