Azora Therapeutics Appoints New Executive Team to Advance AT177
Azora Therapeutics rebrands from Adial Pharmaceuticals and names new leadership as AT177 Phase 1 targets H1 2027.

A corporate rebrand and leadership reset at Azora Therapeutics (formerly Adial Pharmaceuticals, Nasdaq: AZR) signal a focused pivot toward clinical-stage execution, with Phase 1 initiation of AT177 targeted for the first half of 2027, a timeline that will drive near-term decisions on CMO selection, clinical manufacturing scale-up, and IND-enabling study packages.
AT177 is an oral, colon-targeted aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) agonist designed to deliver localized activity in the colon while limiting systemic exposure. The mechanism targets AhR-mediated regulation of intestinal barrier integrity and immune homeostasis in ulcerative colitis, a pathway that has attracted growing preclinical interest but remains without an approved therapeutic. For clinical operations and formulation teams, the colon-targeting delivery strategy will require demonstration of site-specific release performance under 21 CFR Part 211 dissolution and stability frameworks ahead of first-in-human dosing.
Matt Davidson, Ph.D., co-founder, has been appointed President and Chief Executive Officer; Julie Saiki, Ph.D., co-founder, takes the role of Chief Strategy Officer. Both bring stated expertise in AhR biology and inflammatory bowel disease drug development. The leadership appointments follow the June 2026 acquisition of the legacy Azora Therapeutics entity, with stockholder approval of the Series A preferred stock conversion to common stock confirmed on October 28, 2026. Common stock commenced trading under the ticker AZR on October 29, 2026.
The company completed an initial closing of a private placement concurrent with the June merger, generating approximately $32 million in gross proceeds. The round was led by Coastlands Capital, with participation from Boxer Capital Management, Stonepine Capital Management, AuGC BioFund, Kern Capital, and additional institutional and insider investors. Stockholders separately approved exercise of prefunded warrants issued in the same placement. That capital base will underwrite IND-enabling activities and the Phase 1 program, though no clinical site or CRO partnerships have been disclosed.
For contract manufacturers and CDMOs tracking early-stage pipeline opportunities, the colon-targeted oral format and the 2027 Phase 1 window represent a defined engagement horizon for formulation development, analytical method transfer, and GMP batch manufacturing under an investigational framework.
The Phase 1 trial start in the first half of 2027 will serve as the first measurable checkpoint against which Azora's capital deployment and manufacturing readiness can be assessed.
