B. Braun Recalls Lactated Ringers 1000mL Over Contamination
B. Braun recalls one lot of Excel Lactated Ringers 1000mL over cellulose and polystyrene particulate contamination distributed across the US and Canada.

Particulate contamination in a large-volume parenteral solution distributed across the United States and Canada is forcing hospital pharmacies and QA teams to act: B. Braun Medical Inc. has initiated a voluntary recall of one lot of Excel® Lactated Ringers Injection, 1000mL, citing the presence of cellulose cotton fibers, cellulose wood fiber, and polystyrene particles identified in solution. The recall extends to the hospital and healthcare facility level, covering product distributed between August 29 and September 30, 2024, under lot number J4H0773, with an expiration date of November 2026.
The clinical risk profile attached to this recall warrants close attention from QA directors and medical device procurement leads alike. B. Braun's own risk statement acknowledges a reasonable probability of pulmonary emboli, vascular occlusion with potential for tissue necrosis and organ damage, phlebitis, immune system activation, and hemolysis. The affected product is indicated for hydration and fluid replacement across adult, pediatric, and neonatal populations, broadening the potential exposure base considerably. No adverse events have been reported to B. Braun as of the announcement date.
The particle profile, cotton fiber, wood fiber, and polystyrene, points toward environmental ingress or container closure integrity gaps rather than a raw material or formulation failure. For IV solution manufacturers operating under 21 CFR Part 211 and ICH Q10 quality system frameworks, this recall serves as a direct prompt to audit environmental monitoring programs, gowning material controls, and in-process visual inspection protocols. Polystyrene, in particular, is not a typical cleanroom material, raising questions about equipment components or secondary packaging interactions that merit internal review.
B. Braun is notifying distributors and customers by mail and has arranged for return and replacement of all recalled units. Facilities holding catalog number L7500, NDC 0264-7750-00, lot J4H0773 should initiate quarantine and return to place of purchase. Questions can be directed to [email protected], Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST. Adverse events or quality complaints should be submitted through FDA's MedWatch program.
With product expiration set for November 2026, any units still in hospital inventory remain within shelf life, making rapid identification and quarantine the immediate operational priority for affected facilities.
