FDA Finalizes 2026–2027 Flu Vaccine Strain Selection
FDA's VRBPAC has finalized platform-specific influenza strain selections for 2026-2027, triggering immediate batch record and QC protocol updates for vaccine manufacturers.


With FDA's VRBPAC strain recommendations now formalized, influenza vaccine manufacturers face an immediate manufacturing pivot: batch records, reference standards, and QC testing protocols must be realigned to newly specified H1N1, H3N2, and B/Victoria strains before the 2026-2027 production cycle closes. FDA has already notified manufacturers of approved seasonal influenza vaccines of the committee's selections.
The Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) convened on March 12, 2026, evaluating global and U.S. surveillance data covering viral epidemiology, antigenic drift in recent isolates, serological responses to 2025-2026 vaccines, and the availability of candidate strains and reagents. The resulting recommendations carry platform-specific strain designations, a distinction with direct consequences for process validation documentation.
For egg-based production lines, the committee recommended: A/Missouri/11/2025 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus; A/Darwin/1454/2025 (H3N2)-like virus; and B/Tokyo/EIS13-175/2025 (B/Victoria lineage)-like virus. Cell- or recombinant-based platforms carry a divergent H3N2 and B/Victoria designation: A/Missouri/11/2025 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus; A/Darwin/1415/2025 (H3N2)-like virus; and B/Pennsylvania/14/2025 (B/Victoria lineage)-like virus. The H1N1 component is shared across both platforms; the H3N2 and B/Victoria strains differ, requiring separate reference reagent qualification and potency assay validation for each manufacturing route.
For QA directors managing dual-platform facilities, the split designation means parallel workstreams: reagent sourcing, in-process controls, and release testing specifications must be maintained independently for egg-based and cell/recombinant lines. Under 21 CFR Part 610 and applicable biologics GMP requirements, any strain change triggers a review of established specifications and, where applicable, comparability assessments against prior-season lots.
FDA stated it anticipates an adequate and diverse supply of approved seasonal influenza vaccines for the 2026-2027 season, a projection contingent on manufacturers executing strain transitions within compressed timelines typical of annual influenza production cycles.
The measurable checkpoint for plant heads and regulatory leads is reagent availability confirmation from FDA-designated reference laboratories, which will gate potency assay qualification and, ultimately, lot release readiness ahead of the 2026-2027 distribution window.
