Insmed Appoints Samuele Butera as SVP General Manager to Lead Global Respiratory Portfolio

With BRINSUPRI in active launch and an ARIKAYCE label expansion under pursuit, Insmed has placed a seasoned commercial operator at the helm of its respiratory therapeutic area. Samuele Butera joins as Senior Vice President, General Manager, Global Respiratory, effective 23 June 2026, reporting directly to Chair and CEO Will Lewis and sitting on the Executive Committee.

Butera brings more than two decades of global commercial leadership, most recently as President of Pulmonary Hypertension and Retina at Johnson and Johnson, where he oversaw a multi-billion-dollar business unit and led the launch of OPSYNVI (macitentan and tadalafil). Before that role, he served as Worldwide Vice President for Infectious Diseases and Vaccines at the same company, co-leading expansion into COVID therapeutics and vaccines. His earlier tenure at Novartis included Global Head of Cell and Gene Therapies, where he directed the worldwide launch of KYMRIAH (tisagenlecleucel), the first approved CAR-T therapy.

For plant heads and supply chain leads, the appointment signals that Insmed intends to accelerate commercial throughput across its respiratory portfolio at pace. A general manager with launch experience in complex biologics and cell therapies typically applies pressure upstream: demand forecasting tightens, batch release timelines sharpen, and manufacturing scale-up decisions move closer to commercial rather than clinical ownership. The TPIP development program, cited explicitly by both Lewis and Butera as a priority, adds a third asset that will require coordinated process validation and supply readiness planning as it advances.

Butera's background at McKinsey, Goldman Sachs, and the United Nations, combined with graduate training at Harvard's Kennedy School and an economics degree from Università Bocconi, positions him as a strategist comfortable operating across regulatory geographies. For regulatory affairs leads tracking the ARIKAYCE label expansion, his stated intent to accelerate that program suggests supplemental submissions and associated CMC documentation will be active workstreams in the near term.

The measurable checkpoint to watch is the pace of BRINSUPRI uptake through the remainder of 2026, which will serve as the first operational signal of how Butera's commercial strategy translates into supply and distribution execution.
