From powder handling to an internationally established provider of integrated process solutions: over the course of nearly four decades, Dietrich Engineering Consultants SA has significantly expanded its portfolio. Frederic Dietrich, Managing Director of the Dec Group, discusses technological advancement, automation, and the value of taking a holistic approach to process engineering.
From Powder Handling to a Global Technology Group
The story of Dietrich Engineering Consultants SA began in 1987 with a simple but ambitious idea: to transfer powders safely and charge reactors without the risks of explosion or operator exposure. Frederic Dietrich founded the company together with his father, Frederic F. Dietrich Sr., and his brother, Yves Dietrich.
A major milestone followed in 1992 with the launch of the PTS Powder Transfer System®, a technology that would become an industry benchmark. In 2003, the 1000th system was sold to Bayer. “We come from the process side,” says Frederic Dietrich. From its origins as a specialist in powder handling, the company has evolved into an international group employing more than 1,000 people worldwide.
From Powder to Complete Process Solutions
Through a series of strategic acquisitions, Dec Group continuously expanded its technological capabilities. In 2008, the company acquired Jetpharma, adding expertise in micronization technologies. Further additions included Extract Technology and Alconbury Weston Ltd., strengthening the group's position in containment and process engineering. In 2024, the acquisition of BAUSCH Germany GmbH led to the creation of DEC Filling Germany GmbH, marking a significant step into aseptic filling technologies.
Today, the portfolio spans powder handling, particle size reduction and engineering, containment systems, continuous processing technologies, and aseptic filling solutions.
“Our goal is not to offer a machine, but a solution,” emphasizes Frederic Dietrich.
Dec Group supports customers throughout the entire project lifecycle, from concept development and process design to engineering, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning. More than 300 engineers across the group contribute to developing and implementing customized solutions.
Automation as a Key Enabler
While the pharmaceutical and life sciences sectors remain the group's primary markets, Dec Group also serves industries such as chemicals and advanced materials. Demand is increasingly shifting toward integrated and modular production systems capable of adapting to different products, processes, and production volumes.
Automation plays a central role in this evolution. According to Frederic Dietrich, more than 80 employees are dedicated to automation technologies. At the same time, artificial intelligence, robotics, and predictive maintenance are becoming increasingly important drivers of efficiency and operational excellence.
“Everyone is talking about AI, but AI without machinery ultimately achieves very little. You need both,” says Frederic Dietrich.
Innovation Through Flexibility
The group delivers more than 500 projects annually, each configured to meet specific customer requirements. Frederic Dietrich sees this ability to adapt as one of Dec Group's defining strengths.
“Innovation and flexibility are, I believe, our greatest strengths,” he says. Rather than offering customers a rigid portfolio of predefined solutions, the company's approach is to understand individual requirements and develop the most appropriate solution in close collaboration with the customer.
Building on a Strong Foundation
After nearly four decades of growth, Frederic Dietrich sees no need for a fundamental change in direction. The group has established a comprehensive portfolio of technologies, deep process expertise, and a strong international presence. The focus now is on continuously building on that foundation and shaping the future of pharmaceutical manufacturing.
His personal motivation extends beyond business growth alone:
“There is still much to be done to further improve the pharmaceutical world through technology.”
This commitment to innovation, combined with a holistic approach to process solutions, continues to shape Dec Group's vision for the future of modern manufacturing.
