Jacobs Takes Bigger Role In Managing Syracuse's Wastewater

Jacobs (NYSE: J) has been awarded a contract by Onondaga County, New York, to deliver program management services for the county's combined sewer overflow (CSO) abatement initiatives, as well as capacity management and operations and maintenance programs. This new agreement expands Jacobs' ongoing program management responsibilities to encompass the CSO program, enhancing the performance of the sewer system throughout the county through the implementation of Jacobs' Digital OneWater solutions.

Since 2008, Jacobs has been at the forefront of program management for the county's renowned CSO program, managing over 200 green stormwater infrastructure initiatives and enhancements to the wastewater collection system. These efforts have successfully eliminated hundreds of millions of gallons of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) each year in Syracuse. Onondaga County was among the pioneering regions in the United States to achieve closure of the Federal CSO Consent Order, thanks to significant advancements in reducing CSOs and enhancing water quality.

Jacobs Senior President Chrissy Thom, said, "Onondaga County has become a global model for successful CSO abatement by pioneering green infrastructure and traditional engineered infrastructure solutions alongside innovative sewer system modeling, allowing the county to meet their federal obligations ahead of schedule and under budget.  Jacobs has supported the county's CSO reduction objectives for more than 15 years. We'll build on that relationship to deliver additional sewer service improvements and long-term water quality benefits for the community."

Through a new five-year contract, Jacobs will complete Onondaga County's Long-Term Control Plan aimed at CSO abatement and offer program management services that encompass capital planning, preliminary design, and permitting support for ongoing CSO projects. Additionally, Jacobs will implement a capacity management, operations, and maintenance program designed to enhance the efficiency of the county's sanitary wastewater collection system. This initiative will include system capacity modeling and evaluation surveys to pinpoint and rectify capacity issues and sewer defects, utilizing Jacobs' Dragonfly and Argon technologies from their Digital OneWater suite to analyze pipe inspection videos and prioritize necessary repairs.

Recognized as the leading firm in Program Management by Engineering News-Record, Jacobs tackles some of the most complex and iconic infrastructure and transformation projects. Their portfolio includes initiatives like southern California's Pure Water Project Las Virgenes-Triunfo, which aims to secure a more resilient water supply, the Thames Tideway Tunnel—one of the largest water infrastructure projects in the UK—and New Zealand's largest wastewater initiative, Central Interceptor.
