Oral semaglutide's commercial footprint is expanding beyond the United States, and the manufacturing and regulatory infrastructure required to support that scale-up is moving with it. Novo Nordisk launched the Wegovy pill (semaglutide 25 mg) in the United Arab Emirates on 3 June 2026, making the UAE the first market outside the US to receive the product following dual approval by the FDA and the Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE).
The product is the first oral GLP-1 receptor agonist approved for weight management, backed by the OASIS 4 trial programme. In that trial, once-daily oral semaglutide 25 mg produced approximately 17% mean weight loss in adults with obesity or overweight and at least one comorbidity, a result comparable to injectable Wegovy 2.4 mg. One in three participants achieved 20% or greater weight loss. The cardiovascular indication, covering reduction of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) including heart attack and stroke in adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight, carries across both the FDA and EDE approvals.
For contract manufacturers and oral solid dose operations already tracking the GLP-1 pipeline, the UAE launch is an early signal of the production volume trajectory ahead. Novo Nordisk has confirmed select additional market launches in the second half of 2026. The Wegovy pill remains under review by the EMA and other regulatory authorities, meaning process validation packages, site qualification, and supply chain documentation will need to be staged across multiple concurrent regulatory jurisdictions in the near term.
The oral formulation introduces distinct manufacturing considerations relative to the injectable. Peptide stability in tablet form, excipient compatibility, and the absorption-enhancing requirements specific to oral semaglutide place this product outside standard small-molecule OSD process assumptions. QA leads at facilities evaluating GLP-1 oral manufacturing partnerships should be mapping those technical gaps now, ahead of formal technology transfer timelines.
The UAE market context is relevant to demand forecasting: 28% of UAE adults currently live with obesity, with nearly 7.5 million people projected to be living with obesity or overweight by 2035. Novo Nordisk cited local healthcare infrastructure and telehealth readiness as factors in the market selection, criteria that will likely shape the sequencing of subsequent launches.
The pace of EMA review and the timing of additional country approvals will set the critical path for supply network decisions over the next 12 to 18 months.
