Organ preservation company Paragonix Technologies has
partnered with the US Nationwide Organ Recovery Transport Alliance (NORA) to
launch a donor organ courier service aimed at ensuring equitable distribution
of organs across the country. This collaboration combines Paragonix’s advanced
organ preservation devices with NORA’s logistic expertise and commercial flight
networks to enhance organ delivery efficiency.
Lisa Anderson, CEO of Paragonix, emphasized the
transformative potential of commercial air travel for organ transportation,
noting that it reduces costs and lowers environmental impact by minimizing
reliance on private jets. Anderson highlighted that this shift could be one of
the most significant environmental improvements in organ transplantation
logistics.
The partnership follows the enactment of the Federal
Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act, which introduced guidelines for
transporting donor organs in the main cabin of commercial planes. One of the
key technologies involved is Paragonix’s BAROguard Donor Lung Preservation
System, supported by NORA's Care-Custody-Control program to handle customs and
logistics.
Don Jones, Co-Founder of NORA, expressed excitement about
the innovation, noting that they have never seen lungs transported via
commercial flights using advanced preservation methods before. This
collaboration aims to improve equity in organ access nationwide, utilizing
cutting-edge preservation technologies like Paragonix’s PancreasPak, the first
FDA-cleared pancreas preservation system.
Paragonix also recently announced the successful completion
of the GUARDIAN-Heart trial, further solidifying its position as a leader in
organ preservation technology.
