EU Grants Orphan Designation to Perspective Therapeutics' Radiopharmaceutical for GEP-NETs

Perspective Therapeutics has announced that the European Commission (EC) has granted orphan medicinal product designation to [²¹²Pb]VMT-α-NET for the treatment of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (GEP-NETs). The designation follows a positive recommendation from the Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products (COMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), supporting the continued development of the company's radiopharmaceutical candidate.

The orphan designation could provide Perspective Therapeutics with several important development and commercial benefits, including regulatory protocol assistance and potential fee reductions. If the therapy is eventually approved, the designation could also provide up to 10 years of market exclusivity in the European Union. The designation is granted to medicines that address serious or rare conditions and have the potential to provide a significant benefit to patients.

GEP-NETs are a diverse group of tumors that develop from neuroendocrine cells located throughout the gastrointestinal tract and pancreas. While these cancers are relatively uncommon, their incidence and prevalence have risen significantly in recent decades, partly due to improvements in diagnostic technologies and increased awareness of the disease.

Patients with GEP-NETs continue to face significant unmet treatment needs, particularly those with advanced or metastatic disease. Challenges include delayed diagnosis caused by nonspecific symptoms and limited options for achieving long-lasting disease control. The orphan designation for [²¹²Pb]VMT-α-NET represents an important regulatory milestone as Perspective Therapeutics works to advance new radiopharmaceutical approaches for patients with these difficult-to-treat tumors.
