WHO Declares Egypt Malaria-Free
WHO certifies Egypt as malaria-free, highlighting decades of success in eliminating the disease.
In October 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially certified Egypt as malaria-free, a significant public health achievement. This recognition follows decades of efforts to eliminate malaria, making Egypt the third country in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, alongside the UAE and Morocco, to earn this status.
Egypt’s approach involved extensive disease surveillance, free malaria diagnosis and treatment for its population, and cooperation with neighbouring countries to control potential outbreaks. These measures have greatly improved Egypt’s public health system.
The certification also highlights Egypt’s preparedness for future health challenges and its commitment to preventing malaria’s re-emergence.
