Atara Biotherapeutics Gains FDA Acceptance of Tabelecleucel
FDA accepts Atara's tabelecleucel BLA resubmission as Class 2, setting a March 31, 2027 PDUFA date for the first potential U.S. allogeneic T-cell therapy approval.

A Class 2 BLA resubmission for tabelecleucel (tab-cel) has cleared FDA's filing review, setting a PDUFA target action date of March 31, 2027, a checkpoint that will define the first potential U.S. approval pathway for an allogeneic T-cell immunotherapy in EBV-positive post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease. Atara Biotherapeutics announced the acceptance on October 14, 2026, with Pierre Fabre Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (PFP) holding the resubmitted application as Atara's commercialization partner.
The Class 2 designation signals that the resubmission contained substantial new clinical or safety data, triggering a six-month FDA review clock rather than the two-month window assigned to Class 1 responses. For regulatory affairs leads tracking allogeneic cell therapy licensure, the classification confirms the agency treated the response as a substantive amendment to the original BLA rather than a minor administrative correction.
Tab-cel carries Breakthrough Therapy Designation for rituximab-refractory EBV-associated lymphoproliferative disease and orphan drug designation for EBV-positive PTLD. If approved, it would be the first therapy licensed in the U.S. for this indication and, by Atara's account, the first allogeneic T-cell immunotherapy to reach U.S. commercial status. The product is manufactured from an off-the-shelf inventory model, bypassing the patient-specific manufacturing constraints that have complicated GMP scalability for autologous cell therapies.
For plant heads and CMC leads preparing biologics manufacturing suites, the March 2027 action date sets a firm horizon for process validation completion, commercial batch readiness, and any pre-approval inspection scheduling under 21 CFR Part 211 and applicable biologics GMP standards. PFP, as the license holder, will bear primary responsibility for U.S. launch readiness, though Atara has stated it will continue providing support through that process.
Under the existing commercialization agreement, Atara is eligible to receive a $31 million milestone payment upon FDA approval, along with double-digit tiered royalties on net sales and additional commercial sales milestones, financial triggers that are contingent entirely on the outcome of the March 2027 review cycle.
The March 31, 2027 PDUFA date now anchors the pre-approval inspection and commercial readiness timeline for both Atara and PFP, making the next six months of CMC documentation and facility qualification activity directly consequential to licensure.
