Axcelead DDP Joins Lilly TuneLab as First CRO Partner in AI Drug Discovery Platform

Axcelead Drug Discovery Partners' entry into Lilly TuneLab as the platform's first contract research organization signals a structural shift in how AI-augmented predictive modeling reaches early-stage drug candidates, and what biotech sponsors can now expect from CRO-delivered IND-enabling data packages.

Announced June 18, 2026, the collaboration gives Axcelead DDP access to predictive models trained on decades of Eli Lilly proprietary research data, covering ADME, safety, and preclinical attributes across small molecules and antibody therapeutics. In exchange, Axcelead DDP contributes its own proprietary drug discovery data to improve those models. The exchange operates under federated learning architecture, meaning raw datasets remain siloed within each organization while model weights are updated collaboratively, a design that addresses the data-sharing constraints most CROs and sponsors face under confidentiality agreements.

For drug development leads evaluating CRO partnerships, the practical implication sits at candidate selection. Enhanced property prediction at the hit-to-lead and lead optimization stages can reduce late-stage attrition by surfacing liability flags earlier, before preclinical study designs are locked. Axcelead DDP's integrated platform, inherited from Takeda Pharmaceutical in 2017 and covering screening, chemistry, DMPK, and safety under one roof, means TuneLab model outputs feed directly into wet-lab workflows rather than remaining a separate computational layer.

Lilly TuneLab sits within the broader Lilly Catalyze360 ecosystem alongside Lilly Ventures, Lilly Gateway Labs, and Lilly ExploR&D, a structure Lilly has positioned to support biotech innovation through capital, lab access, and research capabilities. Axcelead DDP's participation extends that ecosystem into the CRO channel for the first time, giving biotech customers working with the Fujisawa-based organization a route to Lilly-trained models without a direct Lilly relationship.

The degree to which TuneLab-enhanced predictions translate into measurable improvements in candidate quality, and ultimately into cleaner IND packages, will become visible as biotech programs advance through Axcelead DDP's pipeline over the coming development cycles.
