Regeneron Partners with Truveta to Launch Truveta Genome Project

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. : Truveta/Launch-Partnership; REGN entered into a strategic collaboration with Truveta, Inc., and its health system consortium for the advancement of genetic/healthcare research. As part of the Truveta Series C financing round, Regeneron will commit $119.5 million and will also launch the Truveta Genome Project. This could involve sequencing up to 10 million genomes associated with anonymized EHRs, using Truveta’s database for over 120 million patients and 30 health systems.

“This unprecedented collaboration will allow us to understand such genes and illnesses, their interactions, and the ways they coexist,” said Aris Baras, the Senior Vice President of Regeneron. Considering that over two billion exomes have been sequenced to date and nearly three million of them are being sequenced by Regeneron, it will focus on the discovery of new gene-based biomarkers for drug development and improving outcomes of clinical trials and related personalized medicine services.

Truveta will expand its medical database by linking it to genomic data to improve drug discovery and development, healthcare delivery, and population health. Another organization that has hopped into the Series C round is Illumina, Inc., which specializes in DNA sequencing and has contributed $20 million to this groundbreaking mission.

“Big Data in synergy with technology produces is the method to the scientific progress of the future,” cited George D. Yancopoulos, M.D., Ph.D., President, and CSO of Regeneron. It is unlike the typical sponsorship where parties seek to achieve simple solutions, but in this case, the focus will be on gaining tangible information that will help treat healthcare disparities and bring favorable changes in various healthcare populations.
