Sandoz Expands Renewable Energy Commitment With New European Virtual Power Purchase Agreements Under Energise Program

Sandoz has entered into two additional multi-buyer virtual Power Purchase Agreements (vPPAs) in Europe as part of its strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The agreements bring together Sandoz and nine key suppliers to collectively support the development of new renewable energy projects. These contracts are facilitated through the Energise program, managed by Schneider Electric, which aims to help healthcare and pharmaceutical companies accelerate their transition to clean energy.

Lynn De Proft, Chief Procurement Officer, Sandoz, said: “This step reflects our commitment to operate responsibly and promote renewable electricity. By joining the Energise cohorts, we aim to contribute to a more sustainable healthcare system.”

The move builds on a previous vPPA signed by Sandoz in 2025, which is projected to supply nearly 90% of the company’s current electricity needs across its European operations. The newly signed agreements are expected to further reduce the company’s indirect Scope 2 emissions while also enabling participating suppliers to explore renewable electricity sourcing options. By pooling purchasing demand and lowering entry barriers, the initiative simplifies access to renewable power and strengthens decarbonization efforts throughout the supply chain.

Uta Steffen-Holderbaum, Head of Sustainability, Gerresheimer Group, said: “Our commitment to sustainability includes ambitious targets: a 52% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions compared to 2019 and sourcing 100% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Partnering in initiatives like Energise amplifies our ability to deliver on these goals while supporting our customers’ decarbonization journeys.”

With growing pressure from healthcare systems and regulators for transparent sustainability reporting and credible emissions-reduction plans, collaborative programs such as Energise offer a practical pathway for companies to meet environmental targets. By aggregating demand and facilitating access to renewable energy procurement, the initiative supports broader industry efforts to increase renewable electricity use and advance value-chain decarbonization.

Maureen Mazurek, Chief EHS and Sustainability Officer, Becton, Dickinson and Company, also highlights how important these renewable partnerships are: “Programs like Energise are essential for suppliers aiming to decarbonise and seeking practical pathways to get there. Working with Sandoz helps us align our efforts with customer expectations, while being part of the Energise consortium enables us to access renewable electricity and continue building internal capability. It’s a strong example of how collaboration drives real impact and supports our 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target."
