Sandoz has signed a direct manufacturing and supply agreement with the government of Rwanda to ensure a stable supply of critical medicines. The agreement, signed in Kigali, aims to improve access to affordable, high-quality treatments not only within Rwanda but also across selected African partner countries, with potential for further regional expansion.
“It is good news for Rwanda, for Africa and for our Kundl site: the hub and centre of Europe’s last major end-to-end antibiotic manufacturing network. Securing additional volumes for this important region is great progress but we still need urgent and similar action from EU governments to ensure the sustainability of this unique European asset, which is critical to Europe’s long-term autonomy and resilience.”
The collaboration builds on the Alpbach Communiqué, a multinational initiative launched in Austria to strengthen the supply of essential antibiotics across Europe and partner regions. As a leading global producer of generic antibiotics, Sandoz’s involvement underscores its role in addressing supply chain challenges and improving access to medicines in underserved markets. Rwanda’s participation is also significant, given its role as host of the African Medicines Agency.
Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, Minister of Health of the Republic of Rwanda, stated: “Rwanda is among the countries in Sub-Saharan Africa that reimburse cancer treatments through its public health system, and continues to address infectious diseases as a public health priority.
Initially covering around 60 products, the agreement is intended to serve as a foundation for a sustainable regional procurement model. This approach is expected to enhance supply reliability, reduce dependency on fragmented sourcing, and support long-term healthcare resilience across the region.
“This partnership reflects our efforts to work with established biosimilar and generic manufacturers to expand access to quality, affordable cancer care and essential antibiotic therapies. Through this agreement, Rwanda aims to support improved access to treatment for patients within Rwanda and across the African Union.”
Sandoz highlighted that the partnership aligns with its broader mission to expand access to essential medicines globally. By working directly with governments and regional stakeholders, the company aims to create scalable solutions that improve patient access and strengthen healthcare systems.
